Why This Smoothie Works
In a world of expensive, supplement-heavy smoothies, this recipe offers a refreshing change. Test Kitchen editor Rebecca Firkser, from the Epicurious series “The 10-Ingredient Fix,” shares a smoothie made with just three ingredients plus water. The key is cottage cheese, which provides protein, creaminess, and a mild flavor that thickens the smoothie without the chalkiness of protein powder or the tang of yogurt.
Ingredients
- 2½ cups frozen mixed berries (such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and/or blackberries)
- 1 cup filtered water or unsweetened coconut water
- ¾ cup whole milk or 2% cottage cheese
- 2 Tbsp. unsweetened almond butter
Preparation
Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Divide the smoothie between two glasses. Total time: 5 minutes. Yield: 2 servings.

Swaps and Substitutions
For a sweeter smoothie, add a pitted date or a drizzle of pure maple syrup or honey. For nut-free versions, substitute sunflower seed butter or 1 Tbsp. tahini. Almond butter can be replaced with peanut butter or cashew butter for different flavors. For an extra boost, use unsweetened coconut water instead of filtered water. For a visually appealing touch, swirl a bit of extra nut butter inside the glass before pouring.
